What Is Metabolism And How Does It Work?
Most of us blame our slow metabolism for increased weight. Is slow metabolism the only reason for our weight gain? Think again! – No, obesity occurs due to unhealthy eating habits and an altered lifestyle. The less activity you perform and the more you eat, it is likely that you will end up gaining weight. Having a slow metabolism does not necessarily make you obese.
So what exactly is Metabolism? Let’s debug this phenomenon
Metabolism is a physical and chemical process which takes place inside any living being that helps to sustain life. Metabolism helps provide energy for our basic body functions and other physical activities. Our basic body functions like breathing, digestion, blood circulation, cell growth, and repair require energy. The amount of energy needed to perform the basic body functions at rest is known as Basal Metabolic Rate. The other physical activities that we do like walking on the road or in the park, climbing office stairs, moving boxes from one place to another, and running or jogging requires additional energy. About 70% of the energy is expended in a day to perform basic body functions and the rest of the energy is used up for other physical activities.
In simple words, Metabolism is converting food that we eat into energy.
Metabolism can be divided into two categories:
1. Catabolism: Catabolism occurs when the food that we eat are broken down into simpler molecules during digestion. During this process, a large amount of energy is released – for breaking the food molecules. This is the reason why catabolism is known as ‘Destructive Metabolism’.
2. Anabolism: Anabolism takes place when the simpler molecules are built up into complex compounds like proteins and nucleic acids, consuming a large amount of energy, eliminating wastes, promoting cell growth and repair. Thus, Anabolism is known as ‘Constructive Metabolism’.
So Why Do We Gain Weight?
We gain weight because we consume more calories than actually needed to function our basic body functions and other day-to-day activities. These extra calories turn into fats and get deposited in our body. Our body weight will remain constant if the calorie intake is equal to the number of calories burned.
But, How Can We Burn More Calories To Lose Weight?
We can burn more calories by making a habit of eating small portions of food at regular intervals and exercising – if you’re physically fit. If your body does not allow you to exercise because of any kind of physical injuries, old age, or an overweight issue, then considering the metabolic weight loss program will be the most effective way to lose weight naturally. It’s a safe, secure, and the best way to lose weight successfully.
